Audio Archives of the 1930’s era Jewish American Board of Peace and Justice

Listen to this NPR documentary compilation of audio recordings from Rabbi Rubin’s Board of Peace and Justice (RealAudio, 11:16 min.) and hear community conflict resolution in action. From the late-1930s to 1956, Rabbi Shmuel Aaron Rubin, Director of the House of the Sages synagogue for retired rabbis, presided over a mediation court that convened in one of the synagogue’s back rooms.

Conflict resolution history scholars interested in these boards can learn much more in a Chapter entitled “Law and Acculturation: Immigrant Experiences” in a book by Jerold Auerbach entitled Justice Without Law (1983).
