Discover Thyself: Discernment Tool for (mainly) Quaker Youth
Discover Thyself is a website and online tool designed to help youth people (and older folks too) find clarity on what they would like to focus on in their life after highschool or college. It is based on Quaker values that promote the usefulness of “clearness committees” that ask helpful questions as you think through important decisions and on the importance of sifting through the many competing thoughts that fill our minds listening for the “still small voice” of an inner teacher (God, Spirit, the Devine) that can give our life meaning and purpose. Discoverthyself.org provides a structured set of questions that get you thinking and then it presents you with a narrative that uses your own words to help paint a picture of where you are at the moment with regard to the issues that you are facing. Kind of like Madlibs with a purpose. In addition to the questionnaire, the site provides videos and resource links to jobs sites and college information to help put the process in a Quaker context. DiscoverThyself.org is a project of Earlham College’s Newlin Center for Quaker Thought and Practice. I think it is a cool tool that can serve more than just Quaker Youth. Try it yourself and see if you agree.
