USIP Glossary of Terms for Conflict Management and Peacebuilding
The United States Institute for Peace has really been ramping up their educational programs and one nice side benefit of the course development work is a new searchable online Glossary of Terms for Conflict Management and Peacebuilding. It was compiled by Dan Snodderly, USIP?s director of publications from 1993 to 2002. He drew on a pretty wide range of publications to create this common set of terms that can be referenced in USIP courses at the new Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding, the education and training arm of the Institute.
Video on the Total Costs of War
This video from Good Magazine is over two years old, but I just found it and think it is still instructive. In 2003 Donald Rumsfeld estimated a war with Iraq would cost $60 billion. Five years later at the time this video was created, the cost of Iraq war operations was over 10 times that figure. So what’s behind the ballooning dollar signs? Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilme’s book “The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict” provides the data for this video - breaking down the price tag, from current debts to the unseen costs we’ll be paying for years to come.

Virtual Team Challenge: New City Spill!
This February, Deloitte is sponsoring a high school business skills development competition involving student teams of four players that work together in a virtual environment to try and clean up an oil spill on a city’s river. The simulation is presented to the player from a 3rd person, over-the-shoulder perspective, similar to the kind of viewpoint used in current action and role-playing games (RPGs) but without the violence. The simulation runs on Windows XP/Direct X9 and higher systems using a downloaded game installer.
The rules page provides a basic overview of the competition process. The students take on different roles that provide services to New City as they try to clean up the spill. Choices the students make help save money (which gets directed to United Way instead of to the spill cleanup), reduce environmental impacts and build cooperative relations.

Recommendations Regarding Establishment of a Mediation Clinic by Cynthia Savage
As readers of this blog probably know, I’ve been a supporter of campus mediation services for a long time. Thus I was pleased to see that Cynthia Savage has published a very helpful set of Recommendations Regarding Establishment of a Mediation Clinic in the most recent issue (Vol. 11 No. 2) of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Included is an appendix summarizing the practicum structure in nine graduate programs in dispute resolution/conflict resolution.
The article, available without a subscription, draws on Cynthia’s experience as Director of the Mediation-Arbitration Center and Clinical Law Professor at the University of Denver College of Law from 1988-1996, and as Research Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, teaching the Mediation Clinic from 1987-1988. Nice going Cynthia!
