Slides from my Blogs in a Nutshell Session

Recently (Sept 17th, 2005) I presented a session entitled “Blogs in a Nutshell” at the Southfield Public Library’s Books and Beyond Festival. Here is a pdf version (1.8 MB) of my slides from the session. I cover what a blog is, some of the key features of blogs, some information on who is blogging these days, as well as some information on how to set up a blog user blogger.com and how to use bloglines. In the initial information sent to me to confirm my presentation, the title of the workshop was mistakenly listed as “Bogs in a Nutshell”. I couldn’t resist joking about it in the session, showing photos of some bookends I got in Ireland made out of compacted peat, so you’ll see that as well. Some of the session was a demonstration, and the screenshots overlap in the pdf version, but hopefully you’ll get the idea.

Podcasting 101 Movies

image This 4-minute movie, available online from the Internet Archive, provides a quick overview of what it takes to create a podcast for posting to the web. As Director Stephen Bates notes: “Podcasting 101 is a primer for basic podcasting. Follow the Promiscuous Bullet team as they show a novice just how it’s done, podcasting that is. This production covers the basic tools for creating audio content for distribution through Internet subscription channels.”

Another longer movie (10 minutes) entitled A Podcasting How-to from a different producer, also available from the Internet Archive,  provides a look at a more developed podcast studio setup used to produce a music show. Here’s producer Matt May’s description for it: “This is a 10-minute introduction to my studio, the equipment I use, and how I assemble my music podcast, Staccato. I talk about mixing, Mac software, and how to remember exactly what it is you want to say.”
