CAMPUS MEDIATION PROGRAM
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MANUALS In addition to Bill Warter's key book Mediation
in the Campus Community, a number of campus mediation Technical
Assistance Manuals are now available, including one from Wayne State
University's Mediating Theory and Democratic Systems program, one
from the Association for Student Judicial Affairs, one from the
Government Law Center of Albany Law School, and a offering from
College Legal Information, Inc.. Also available is a more general
(i.e., not campus specific) but quite helpful mediation program
guidebook from the National Association for Community Mediation.
Brief information about these follows below: 1) Ready-Set-Go: A Technical Assistance Manual for Creating
and Maintaining a Campus Mediation Center written by Bill Warters.
The 50+ page document contains a variety of sample forms
and reports to assist new programs as they develop their mediation
services. (Sorry - This item is no longer available...Much of the content has been woven into the Mediation in the Campus Community book Bill wrote.)
2) Mastering Mediation: A Guide for Training Mediators in a
College and University Setting by Rick Olshak. (2001) This mediation
skills training manual, written by a former president of the Association
for Student Judicial Affairs, is presented as a binder with removable
pages. It is designed to give you all the elements you need to construct
4 training tracks focused on the campus environment: basic, advanced,
combined and an isolated in-service training. Participants gain
an understanding of the mediation process and the skills involved.

3) The Best Practices Manual: An Interdisciplinary Approach
to Service-Learning and Mediation Assistance written by Phil
Moses and published in June of 1997, reports on the experiences
of the Albany Law School Mediation Assistance Program, funded by
a grant from FIPSE. The unique project involved students from six
colleges and universities working together to provide mediation
services to to residents of the Albany Housing Authority. The project
included court-certified mediation training with quasi-clinical
fieldwork apprenticeships, a seminar-style ongoing meeting, and
reflective learning journals. A full account of the project and
the significant learnings are included. A useful appendix of sample

4) Managing Campus Conflict Through Alternative Dispute Resolution
is a recently released publication (August, 1999) from the Center
for Legal Information, Inc., the publisher of Lex Collegii,
a quarterly legal newsletter for independent higher education. As
described by the publisher, this manual analyzes and assesses alternative
dispute resolution systems available to the college campus. It focuses
on widely accepted forms of alternative dispute resolution, how
they work, and their application to the collegiate environment.
The manual includes data to evaluate options and determine how processes
can be adapted to a particular institution and environment. Appendices
of policies and forms that can be used for arbitration, mediation,
grievance processing, and ombudsman systems is provided. Detailed
bibliographies on higher education and dispute resolution are included.

5) Community Dispute Resolution Manual: Insights and Guidance
from 2 Decades of Practice. For newcomers to the community mediation
field, this manual provides a history of the field and serves as
a program management guide. For those more familiar with community-based
dispute resolution programs, this manual is intended as a self-assessment
guide. The manual is a product of a NIDR task force composed of
leaders in the community mediation field. Written in 1991, 90 pages,
