Once a need was determined, the Mediation Advisory Council was formed

The Campus Mediation Center (CMC) is a student run and funded
organization which functionsunder the auspices of the Program on
the Analysis and Resolution of Conflicts (PARC). TheCMC began in
1988 as a joint effort between PARC graduate students and the Office
ofResidence Life. Also associated with PARC and CMC is the Conflict
Resolution ConsultingGroup, a consortium of graduate students and
faculty who offer professional training andconsulting services to
the University community for a nominal fee.
The Campus Mediation Center is housed in a student-run theater
complex and an academicbuilding. Our Center is funded by PARC with
a graduate assistantship (tuition plus stipend) andby student fees
from both graduate and undergraduate students. The program is staffed
by afaculty supervisor, a graduate student, a work study and volunteer
interns. Academic credit isoffered to interns who volunteer for
ten or more hours per week through the CommunityInternship Program
at S.U. Mediation are performed by volunteers from the campus communitywho
have attended a twenty-hour basic mediation training.
Services are available at no cost to all members of the University

Specialists. Aspects of theconflict resolution program include providing
a safe and neutral process that acknowledges anindividual's right
to address concerns and encourages the resolution of such without

grievance process. The LaborRelations Division is responsible for

The Resolution Coordinator administers the Code of Student Conduct
and directs the Office ofStudent Conflict Resolution. The Office
was established in January 1993, after the Regentsapproved a student
disciplinary policy.
The Resolution Coordinator: reviews complaints from faculty, students,
or staff; investigatesalleged violations; counsels students, faculty,
and staff about the resolution process, assistscomplaints and accused
students who are preparing for arbitrations and mediation; enforcessanctions;
and educates the University community about the Code. The most common
complaintis assault and battery, followed by harassment.
The Code does not address academic integrity.Each semester,
the Office averages 30 formal complaints, 5 mediation, and 15arbitrations.
The Office of Student Conflict Resolution is part of the Office

The Mediation Program offers conflict management services in the
form of consultation andmediation with conflicting parties, and
facilitation of difficult issues for faculty, staff and studentgroups.
The program began in 1987 as a result of research and initiative
by a graduatestudent.
The program falls under the auspices of the Office of Student
Life in cooperation with theAssociated Students of the University
of Oregon (ASUO), and is physically housed in thecampus center.
The program is staffed by the director, a half-time clerical assistant,
work studystudents, student interns, and volunteer mediators. Training
is hands-on and is meant tosupplement a standard 30- to 40 hour
training readily available in Oregon and oncampus.
Services are available to all students, faculty and staff. The
average quarter term involves 25-40cases, of which more than half
come to the mediation table. Typical cases include any issues thatarise
involving members of the university community. The most common cases
involve housingissues, academics, workplace disputes, student groups,
even student divorce.

collaborative problem solving. The program began inSeptember 1993
as part of the university's strategic planning process.
The program falls under the auspices of Administration and Planning
and is physically housed inthe campus center. Funding in the amount
of $50,001-$100,000 is provided by administrationand planning. The
program is staffed by an administrative assistant and the program
coordinator.Selection process for mediators includes Vice-Presidential
appointments. Training includes 40hours of mediation, 10 hours of
University policy/procedures and 8 hours of collaborativeproblem
solving.

civil, legal disputes, landlord / tenant andneighborhood disputes.
The program began in 1992-93.
The program falls under the auspices of Law School Clinical Law
Program and is physicallyhoused in the Law School Clinical Law Offices.
The program is staffed by the director/lecturer,case developers,
research assistants who are law students, and 20 volunteer mediators,
trainers,coaches, program developers, advisors and attorneys. Selection
process for mediators includestraining processes and a lottery for
the opportunity. Training includes 36 hours of workshops plusweekly
1-hour sessions for 20 weeks as well as mock mediation, observation
of real mediationand co-mediation.
Services are available to all students, faculty, staff and administrators
and anybody outside of theUniversity as well. Typical cases include
consumer protection, employment, business, civil andlegal disputes.
The most common case involves consumer protection and businessissues.

The campus Judicial Affairs program at WOSC offers a diversion
from adjudication in the formof panel type mediation. Mediation
is offered to the entire campus through a campus mediationgroup
co-coordinated by Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.
Mediation services are housed in the College Center. Funding has
come through grants and gifts.The program is staffed by two volunteer
coordinators and by 18 volunteer mediators. Theselection process
for mediators includes a forty hour mediation training program.

The University Complaint Center (UCC) facilitates communication,
problem solving and mediation in cases involving students in conflict
with other students, faculty or staff. The Center adheres to the
principles of impartiality, independence and confidentiality.
The Director of Student Affairs is responsible for the UCC, under
the auspices of the Vice President. Complaints and adjudication
procedures are defined under Presidential Regulation Number 2 (concerning
student conduct).
The UCC is centrally located in the Office of Student Affairs.
The Director of Student Affairs,the Coordinator of the Office of
Student Affairs, and the Student Relations Assistant act as Complaints
Officers in addition to their other administrative duties.
Complaints Officers receive mediation training through community
courses and workshops in conflict resolution and mediation. Assistance
with non-academic concerns is available from the UCC or one of the
many designated complaints Officers representing each College, faculty
and the library. Complaints may also be directed to special centers
such as the Center for and Race Ethnic Relations (CRER), the Sexual
Harassment Education & Complaint Center(SHEACC), the Status
of Women of Office, and The Office for Persons with Disabilities
(OPD).The UCC is funded from student ancillary fees.
Services are available in all cases involving students or student
discipline. The UCC has an annual average of 129 inquiries, 74 conciliations,
8 formal mediations, 28 shuttle mediations and6 judicatory hearings.
The most common case involves students in conflict with students.
