Dispute Resolution / Grievance Procedures offers conflict management
services in the form of mediation and judicial processes through
a college grievance forum (for disputes/grievances) for members of
the college community. The program began four years ago. The Dean
of Students facilitated a faculty, student and staff task force to
mold new procedures.
The program falls under the auspices of Student Affairs and is
physically housed in the Student Union. Funding in the amount of
$5,001-$10,000 is provided by Student Affairs and administration
and Finance. The program is staffed by three college grievance officers
and also several mediation advisors who are volunteers. Selection
of Mediators is approved by the grievance officers. Training includes
10-12 hours in mediation.
Services are available to all students, faculty, staff and administrators.
Typical cases include harassment, assault, communication conflicts,
grade appeals and policy clarifications. The most common case involves
harassment complaints (sexual and racial) where the second most common
is community standard issues.

MCRS offers conflict resolution services in the form of mediation,
conciliation. The program began in 1986, when Gary Zimmerman spent
a sabbatical year in San Francisco with Community Boards.
The program falls under the auspices of Student Affairs and is
physically housed in the administration building. Funding in the
amount of $2,000 is provided by Student Affairs. The program is staffed
by Dr. Zimmerman and one student director. Also there are about
40 volunteers serving as case developers and conciliators having
gone through a three semester hour course in mediation and conciliation
before becoming volunteers.
Services are available to all students, faculty, staff and administrators
as well as families of students and people in the community. The
average semester has 20 inquires and 10 formal mediations. Typical
cases include student conflicts as well as landlord tenant issues.
The most common case involves roommates where the next most common
cases include floormates,ex-dates, sexual harassment and racial
tensions.

MSU Judicial System offers conflict management services in the
form of the judicial process. Itoriginally was operated by Office
of Student Affairs.
The program falls under the auspices of Student Affairs and is
physically housed in theadministrative building. Funding in the
amount of $50,001-$100,000 is provided by StudentAffairs. The program
is staffed by the coordinator of student life, an administrative
assistant andtwo graduate students who are hearing coordinators.
Hearing officers are selected from a pool ofgraduate students. Training
includes concepts of due process, sanctioning and application offederal
and state law.
Services are available to all students, faculty, staff and administrators
as well as all members ofthe community and families of students.
The average quarter has 70-80 judicatory hearings.Typical cases
include incidents that may violate statement of student conduct
as well asoff-campus student issues. The most common case involves
alcohol violations where the secondmost common is harassment or
failure to comply with security officers.

personnel or policies. The office began in1967.
The office reports to the President and is physically housed in
an academic building. Funding isover $100,000 and is provided through

Conflict Resolution Resource Service (CRRS) offers conflict management
services in the form ofmediation and educational programs. The program
began in the fall semester of 1994. Theprogram falls under the auspices
of department of Dispute Resolution which offers both Mastersand
Ph.D. programs in Dispute Resolution. The Department contributes
the funding for aprogram coordinator who oversees the intake, scheduling
and conducting of mediation andtraining programs for the center.
The CRRS provides services to the University and Communitypopulation
who want to learn about and utilize mediation as an alternative
method to resolvetheir disputes.
Mediators must achieve a 24 hours of training and go through an
interview process in order to bea mediator for the center. Many
of our qualified mediators are also graduate students in theDispute

community standards.

Campus Hearing Board offers conflict management services in the
form of judicial processesthrough hearing panels composed of students,
faculty and staff. The program began in 1984 bythe Vice-President
of Student Services in response to a growing need for formal adjudication
ofdisputes.
The program falls under the auspices of Student Affairs and is
physically housed in the CollegeCenter. Funding in the amount of
$0-$5,000 is provided by Student Affairs. The program isstaffed
by the chairperson and a secretary. Selection process for mediators
includes nominationsby the senior administrators. Training includes
an orientation course and a survey of campushearing board handbook.
Services are available to all students, faculty, staff and administrators.
The average year has60-80 cases. Typical cases include violations
of campus code with the exception of academicdishonesty which is
covered by academic affairs. The most common case involves alcoholviolations
where the second most common is property damage.
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is a public, four-year
institution offering Bachelorsand Masters degrees. There is academic
credit offered to volunteers. There is academiccoursework for conflict
management. There are 5,500 full-time students, 188 full-time faculty,
90part-time faculty, 116 full-time administrators.
