when your students are involved

Hi. I volunteer at the student mediation center on my campus as a mediator. I also teach on campus. Recently I was asked to mediate an issue in which one of the people is taking one of my classes. I didn't do so because I felt this was a conflict. I was surprised that the center doesn't have a policy against faculty not being involved in cases where one of the people involved is their student. Has anyone else run into a similar situation? What was the policy at your local mediation center?
