Description of the Issues in the Case:

Male and female students were in an established relationship of 1 year+. Young woman becomes pregnant, the young man had typical reactions... "Is it mine?, You will ruin my life, I'm not willing to quit school for a factory job, etc" She terminated the pregnancy, they subsequently broke up, all this within a 3 week period. He says he is seeing someone else. She wants her belongings back that are at his apt, wants 1/2 the medical costs totaling around $250.00.

Status of Intake/Intervention Efforts:

Intake interview with female went well, she was very specific about her needs, was able to see areas where she would be willing to compromise. Attempt to set up intake with male party was refused by him.

Special Issues or Challenges:

The male student is angry that she involved a 3rd party, refuses to participate in mediation.

Questions for Reviewers to Address:

Legally, what is her next action? Is he liable? Is it appropriate to explore with her the idea of dropping the case and learning a difficult lesson?

Depending on the structure and location of the dispute resolution program you might find a way to compel him to come in and at least have an initial intake interview. She does have a right to get her belongings back. As for his liability for 1/2 the medical costs, I'm not sure that he is. If there is no "hook" to get him in the I would say that having the discussion of learning a hard lesson would be appropriate
